How to Train Cats

Do you have a furry friend that you are at the end of your tether with? Do you find yourself constantly pulling your hair out trying to get your cat or kitten to do what you have asked it? If so then you might be wondering how to train cats. There are a few simple secrets that many people over look when it comes to learning how to train cats and this article will teach you a few tips and hints on how to get started with all of your cat training problems.

Toilet training: this is the most common problem that pet owners have to contend with because whenever you get a new pet you always have to toilet train them. When it comes to cats, especially male cats they can be quite difficult to toilet train but what you need to remember is to stay calm. Cats will not respond to shouting or smacking, so if you catch your cat doing his business where he shouldn’t, get down to his level and hold him so he doesn’t run away and tell him ‘no.’ then take him to his litter tray and show him where he should be doing his business. You need to be patient and carry on with this process in order for it to work and always be sure to give your pet lots of praise when he does go in his tray.

Scratching furniture: many cat owners suffer from the problem of their cat tearing up their furniture. The reason why then do this is not because they set out to ruin your brand new cushions, but because it is a way of sharpening their claws and they also do it to stretch. To beat this problem, invest in a scratching post and every time you catch your cat having a good go at your couch, take him to his post and encourage him to scratch that instead.

Marking: male cats are terrible at marking their territory and they don’t care where they do it! If you have a male cat then the first and most effective way of stopping this behaviour is to have your cat spayed. This will make sure that they are less likely to carry on marking, but if they do till spray around the house then you need to find ways to deter them. Put down something against the furniture which your cat will not like the smell of and he will steer well clear. If you catch him doing it, tell him no and put him outside. Only use this method for this particular training so that the cat knows what he is doing wrong.
