Getting Rid of Cat Urine Odor

Sometimes before you start trying to figure out the trick to getting rid of cat urine odor you might need to understand why it is happening to begin with.  Cats usually don’t just veer away from their routine unless something has changed, so if your cat has been a good litter box trained animal before and isn’t now, you might want to ask yourself what has changed.  Many things can change in a cat’s life that cause it to act out and just like kids you need to understand what the issue is or you might never solve the problem.  In the case of cats urinating all over your house, not solving the problem is not acceptable.

There are a few reasons your cat might be suddenly misbehaving.  First and foremost has something changed with the litter box?  Check it out, is it clean?  Have you changed the type of litter you are using?  Have you changed the location?  Is someone else now responsible for keeping it clean?  Any of these changes in routine can set your cat off and cause them to find some other place to pee.  Cats hate it when their litter box is dirty.  What you think is dirty and what they think is dirty can be two different things so  scoop up everything as often as you see it and change your litter appropriately.

The second reason your cat might be urinating is that they might be spraying to mark their territory.  Has someone moved in recently?  Have you added another animal to the mix?  Did you recently move to a different house?  Any of these events will make your cat (male and female) mark their territory.  Most cats lift their tails straight up in the air and do a bit of shaking when they are spraying verses the way they normally urinate.  If you see this behavior you should loudly reprimand them with a noise that startles them or with a spray of water in the face.  This behavior is fairly correctable.

However, if your cat has left its mark and you are now in the process of getting rid of cat urine odor you should consider getting a hold of the products that are made specific for the treatment of cat urine. Before you use anything the most important step is to soak up the urine while it is still wet if you can.  First use paper towels and then use more with some weight on them (either you standing on them or something else) to really soak up the urine.  After you have done that you can use the cleanser you have picked out on the spot and blot up the excess.

There are many way of getting rid of cat urine odor.  There are home products, there are store products and there are other enzyme based cleaners that you can get at the vet or the pet store all will work well with removing the odor.  You might have to do a little trial and error but you will find what you are looking for if you keep trying new things until you get it right.
