Cats are the second most popular animal behind dogs with one big exception, eliminating cat urine odors make them the hardest to deal with once they have developed this as an issue. Cat urine is the most difficult domestic animal urine to eliminate in terms of the smell and odor that it emits. The extremely strong, pungent odor is very hard to get rid of and it takes a strong cleaner to offset it. For many cat owners it actually comes down to common household items rather than the cleaners you can get at the store.
Cats urinate in two cases; they urinate as normal because they have fluid to eliminate or they spray to mark their territory. In either case there is an odor and stain to get rid of. The odor from spraying is even stronger than normal urination and lingers even more. Eliminating cat urine odors is important if you want to be able to roam your house without the unpleasant smell following you around. Cat’s urine is already strong because of the protein rich diet they normally have. This protein is released through the urine and often crystallizes which makes it even more difficult to get rid of.
So how do you clean these stains and get rid of the scent of cat urine? There are a few different ways but the most important step in all of them is to get to the accident fast and absorb the majority of the urine with dry paper towels or clothes. Spend considerable time working on getting up the urine. Getting to it while it is wet will make your odor elimination issues much easier. Once the urine dries and crystallizes it because much more difficult to get up and clean. Once you are comfortable that you have gotten up as much of the accident as you can then prepared the location by rinsing it with cool water. Blot up as much of this as you can as well.
You can use any number of home products to clean it but in most cases the more commercial cleaners are better for the overall odor removal and deep cleaning. Eliminating cat urine odors is dependent on you being able to reach the depth of the stain with the cleaner/cleanser that you use to remove it. Also think about using a wet vac on the stain especially if it is big. The wet vac forces water all the way through the fabric and then removes the wetness as well. This action is very good for removal of deep rooted stains.
There are many ways to rid your home of urine smells. Try to keep the litter box clean and neat and make sure that you change the litter as often as you should. Keep the cat’s routine as normal as you can since a stressed cat tends to urinate in different places because of their nerves. So if your cats behavior is starting to change make sure you are aware of the changes that might also be at the root of the problem.
