Cat Odor Removal
Have you ever wondered why cat odor removal is so hard? It truly is not easy to remove these odors from the carpet or fabric that have been the scene of the accident. Cat urine has proteins in it that when dries on any surface forms a type of crystal. It is the crystallization that is difficult to clean. Many commercial sprays will eliminate the odor for a while but the crystals reactivate in moist conditions and the odor will start seeping out again. It is because of this that you should use something specific for the elimination of cat odor and not a generic cleaner.
First understand what you should NOT use for cat odor removal. Cat urine is ammonia based, so you should not use an ammonia based cleaners. Additionally bleach interacts with ammonia (such as the cats urine) so if you want to use bleach you need to make sure that you have done a very thorough job in getting up as much of the cat urine as you can before using any product with bleach in it. Many cat owners find that bleach based products work for them in removing the odor but there are other remedies that might work a bit better.
Home remedies are used by many cat owners. And although some of them work okay, the potency and intensity of cat urine usually needs something a bit more lethal. It is for this reason that you will probably want to stick to those products that are made specifically for the unique content in cat urine. So pick out a product made specifically for that problem. Many other general urine cleansers are more geared to dogs and will not work on your cat issue.
There are some general cat odor removal guidelines for you to follow no matter what cleaner you end up deciding to use that are just as important. Blot, don’t rub. You just spread it all around when you rub. Of course clean it up as soon as you notice it. The quicker you get to it the less of a chance it has to bond to the fabric. Don’t use ammonia; the cat will want to go back there over and over since they are use to the ammonia smell. Try to keep the cat away from the area until it is dry and the smell has been taken care of.
Try to watch your cat and see if they are spraying or urinating. The cause is totally different for one than the other and will be dealt with totally differently. Make sure you are keeping the litter box clean and changed often enough. Think about if anything has happened to stress your cat (changes in routine or additional people/animals in the house) so you can better understand why the cat might be peeing outside of their box. There are many commercial cleaners you can use to get rid of the odor but if you don’t understand the cause and address that as well your cat might keep on misbehaving no matter what you might use.
